Labour Well Ahead In Camden As Lib Dem Vote Collapses
Posted on May 1st, 2008 by admin. Filed under Elections.
Despite the very disappointing overall result for Ken Livingstone in the London elections on 1st May 2008, there was a clear victory for the Labour Party in Camden. After a hard-fought campaign by Labour candidate, Nicky Gavron AM, Labour was ahead in 14 wards out of 18 and would have even defeated the Lib Dem Leader of Camden Council, Keith Moffitt, in his West Hampstead ward if the results were reproduced at a local election. The Lib Dems were pushed into 4th place on the list vote, behind Labour, the Tories and the Greens.
Labour leader, Cllr Anna Stewart, said, “This strong showing by Labour in Camden is because local people supported Ken and Nicky’s agenda of improving public services, tackling inequality and prioritising green issues. This contrasted sharply with the Lib Dems and Tories, who have let us down with unpopular cuts to local services from the Town Hall.
“Camden Labour will be working hard in the months and years ahead to take forward Ken and Nicky’s approach at the local level.”
