Meet your 2010 Belsize Ward Candidates...
     

Sam Gunasekera

 

Sam has lived in Hampstead and Belsize Park for nearly 16 years and knows the area very well.  She has also been an active member of the Labour Party for 6 years.

Sam feels passionately about the issues that affect the communities who live here, from lack of funding in local schools, parking problems to issues such as housing.  She wants to help Labour make Belsize a better place to live - as a resident She is affected by all these issues too.

Sam knows that dealing with the Council is hardly an easy experience but she is convinced that she could help do a better job that the current Lib Dem / Tory coalition, who've broken their promises over the years.

Sadashivrao Nanasaheb Deshmurkh (Desh)

 

Dr Sada Deshmukh, known as Desh, has lived in Belsize Park for almost 50 years. He was a Camden Labour Councillor for 8 years and has an extensive knowledge of Council matters. During that time he dealt with a variety of issues raised by residents about matters of concern. 

He was Mayor of Camden, 1995 –  96 and he used his term of office to raise funds to help senior citizens of the borough. 

A life long trade unionist and employment lawyer, Desh fought for the low paid shop floor workers in department stores (Selfridges) and also served as a member of the Employment Tribunal, England & Wales until his retirement. 

He now serves the community in many voluntary roles. He has been a trustee of Voluntary Action Camden since 1990. 

Desh is committed to representing and supporting local people, irrespective of their class, creed, race or religion. His goal in ‘Public Service’ within the community.

Luca is a keen cyclist and environmental campaigner. He has worked to reduce the school run and improve school lunches. He has been a very active chair of governors at Torriano Junior School for about 10 years, and has recently been elected chair of Camden Chairs & Governors, the association of all governors in Camden.

He lives in a housing estate in Gospel Oak where he was instrumental in creating a safe bike depot that has encouraged residents to cycle.

He strongly opposed the war in Iraq and the creation of academies. He has been appalled by the right-wing policies of the Tory-LibDem administration in Camden and is fighting to win back Camden for Labour.

Luca is Labour branch secretary in Gospel Oak. He works as translator and interpreter and has three children at university.
