Meet your 2010 Cantelowes Ward Candidates...

Phil Jones

Phil Jones has lived in Camden since 2002 and is a resident of Patshull Road in Cantelowes ward. He works in the Borough for a consumer charity campaigning to get people a better deal from banks and other financial firms. He is active in the community as a primary school governor and as a workplace representative for Unite the Union. Phil enjoys the amazing diversity of Camden where all different kinds of people live side by side.

As a school governor, Phil wants to see better support from the Council for local schools and to use government funds for a community school in the south of the Borough rather than an academy in Swiss Cottage. He wants to see direct investment in council housing through the so-called '4th option' and an end to the Council's housing sell-off which denies local housing to those who need it most. Phil also wants to see the Council doing much more on green issues and has campaigned locally against the Council's decision to remove recycling facilities for people on Camden's estates while rolling out extra services in Hampstead.

Outside of community activities, Phil enjoys football, walking and the music scene of Camden Town.

Angela Mason photo

Angela Mason CBE

Angela has lived and worked in Camden for over 25 years and is standing in her own ward. She has always believed in a society, free from prejudice where people have an equal chance in life and for ten years was Director of Stonewall, the lesbian and gay civil rights group.  She is now the Chair of the Fawcett Society the leading women's rights organisation.

She has worked in local government as a solicitor in Camden Council and in national government as Head of the Women and Equality Unit where she was responsible for introducing the Civil Partnership Act. She has just been appointed as a Commissioner on the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Previously she was one of the group that started Camden Law Centre and was very active in the 'municipalisation' campaign to stop the exploitation of private tenants and increase the supply of council housing.  She also helped set up the first refuge for women fleeing domestic violence in Camden.

Angela is a keen gardener and would like to see a network of gardening clubs throughout the borough and better use of Council land for growing and cultivation as part of a major Council initiative on climate change.

Angela feels that Camden has been a good place to live for her and her family and that her daughter has had the benefit of attending good Camden schools.  Now she would like to give something back and ensure that Camden remains a borough where there is a real mix of housing, good schools for everybody; a place that is enriched by the diversity and skills of all its residents.

Warwick Sharp

Warwick is a Business and Economics secondary school teacher and educational policy advisor. He lives just off Kentish Town Road by the junction with Prince of Wales Road, and currently serves as a Camden school governor.

Warwick is passionate about tackling the issues that are important to Cantelowes residents. Warwick is working hard to campaign for youth funding to be reinstated to local youth clubs, and played a leading role in setting up the public meeting to protest against the cuts to Maiden Lane Youth Club. Warwick has run affordable housing campaigns in the past which have resulted in council promises to provide more affordable housing for those who need it most. He is currently campaigning against the housing sell offs across Camden in order to help achieve the same result. Warwick believes in the importance of local green campaigns around issues such as food recycling. He wants improved public services for all Cantelowes residents especially through these difficult economic times.

Warwick is excited by the opportunity to represent you and be a strong voice acting on your behalf. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with him if you any questions or issues you would like to discuss.
