Meet your 2010 Frognal & Fitzjohns Ward Candidates...

Shahnewaz Ahmed

Shahnewaz came to the UK in 1996. Since his arrival he has been actively involved in the community. He has lived in Camden since coming to the UK and it is here that he got involved in community work.

Shahnewaz has been actively involved with the voluntary sector for the last 15 years. He has been involved in a many groups locally in the Somers Town area. He was Assistant Treasurer of Bengali Worker Association from 2001-2005 and is currently the Chair of the Somers Town Bengali Cultural Association, and also a member of SPH Tenant Association.

As an assistant Treasurer Shahnewaz was instrumental in the development of the Bangladeshi community. He designed and advised upon new strategic directions for the organisation such as new projects for the elderly, young people and women.

At present he works full-time as an Outreach Scheme Manager with Circle Anglia Housing (Former Circle 33 housing).

Camden is a vibrant diverse borough where there is a large multicultural community. Shahnewaz is committed to making it a better place to work and live. Camden is a borough of culture, full of energy and excitement. He is keen to address the challenges and contribute to making Camden an attractive, safe and pleasant home for all residents. Shahnewaz believes this can only be achieved with the Labour party as the party which strongly recognises these different cultures and diversities.

Shahnewaz wants to make Frognal & Fitzjohns ward a better place to live and work, and wants Labour to be at the forefront of these new and challenging times. In a time of deep economic recession, overcrowded residents, increased fuel bills and vulnerable elderly communities, he believes that a substantial Labour victory is crucial so that he can be involved in all aspects of helping the ward residents and the communities in Camden.

Shahnewaz looks forward to working with and for Frognal & Fitzjohns residents.

Paul Blanchard

Paul lives in the ward, having moved to Hampstead nearly two years ago, and lives in Heath Street with Heather, his wife of nearly eight years, and their dog Sweep. He started his first business, an internet hosting company, aged 17 from his bedroom; and since 2001 runs a small PR agency called Right Angles, which employs six people.

He joined the Labour Party in 1996, aged 21. In his former home town of York, he served six years on the local council, and was the 2005 Parliamentary candidate for the Conservative seat of Ryedale, in North Yorkshire. He is proud that his campaign received the largest increase for Labour in the whole country, and he has a framed letter from the Prime Minister thanking him for his efforts proudly on display at home. Paul was also a Parliamentary advisor to Lord George Foulkes for a number of years, and in 2009 Paul was elected Chair of Labour Humanists.

Paul is currently 34, but turns 35 on May 6th, the day of the local election. On being selected as one of Labour’s candidates Paul said, “Securing this local ward for Labour, and working hard to ensure that Glenda gets re-elected, would be the best birthday present possible. I really care about Hampstead, it’s where I live, and I can see that much needs to be done. The Tories and the Lib Dems have really neglected the area – look at the huge amount of uncollected rubbish on the street. Their short-sighted ‘love your high street’ campaign which involved closing the shop on Heath Street, only to keep the traffic wardens using it as an office, which meant that they could not let it to another business, was a disgrace. I am honoured to have this opportunity to represent my local residents, and if elected, will dedicate myself fully to it.”

Phil Hingley

Phil joined the Labour Party when he read Margaret Thatcher’s election manifesto in 1979 and realised that her devotion to free market ideology flew in the face of fairness and his concerns for the environment.  Now the environment is a much hotter topic than it was then!  The recent banking crisis (and more particularly the government’s remedies) shows that markets are not the answer to every problem.

In Camden he is concerned about the council’s approach to property used by voluntary organisations and small businesses.  The council as a landlord seems to take an inflexible, commercial, approach which ignores the contributions such organisations make to community and cultural life in the borough.

In both professional life and as a commuter he is concerned about users experience of public transport.  He works for Network Rail and has been a director of a council-owned bus company.  Jubilee Line users have suffered pain (and will suffer more) from line closures.  Soon the work moves to the Northern Line.  There are real gains for the future when the work is complete but we want to be sure that it’s done as efficiently as possible to minimise disruption.

Phil moved to Camden 5 years ago and commutes to work in Reading.  He lived there for many years and was a Borough councillor.  His portfolio included responsibility for crime and disorder and the voluntary sector and he brings that experience and knowledge to Camden.

Any spare time seems to be increasingly occupied by grandchildren.
